In the Lab, Is Yeast Alive? We had four test tubes, two with yeast and water, and two with yeast, water, and sugar. And we put balloons over the top of the all of the test tubes to see just how much air the yeast would release. We were able to conclude that the test tubes with the sugar in them produced more air. The Purpose of this lab wasn’t as much on the study of yeast, but about using the scientific method throughout our experiment. First we had to come up with a hypothesis (A proposed answer to a scientific question) for example ours was “If sugar is added to the yeast and water solution, then the yeast will “burb” causing the balloon to inflate.” In the experiment we also had to identify the independent and dependent variables, constants, and control group. In this lab we were able to see how yeast reacts towards sugar and water. I think that we did a great job identifying the different variables and groups. Next time we would like to enlarge our data samples, for example have 10 test tubes instead of four, to be able to see more variety in our data and to also see if the data is about the same in each test tube.
